Protect your family

Check for injuries, both in your household and with your neighbors. People may be too injured to seek out help. Administer first aid or call emergency services, if need be.

Downed power lines can be a lethal electrocution hazard. Avoid them when walking outdoors.

Likewise, flooded electrical circuits and busted gas mains can also be a hazard for fire.

Protect your property

Most insurance companies will reimburse your expenses, as long as they are reasonable. Make the repairs you need to, but keep those receipts!

Take photos and notes of all damage. This will help greatly wnen dealing with both your insurance agent, as well as adjusters.

An important consideration is not to allow yourself to feel pressured. Of course you'll want to return things back to normal as soon as you can, but be wary of those that either try to take advantage of your situation, or simply don't have the right experience. Often contractors only experienced in new construction will seek bids after disaster for repair work they are not qualified for.  Don't pay any contractors or sign any contracts unless you are sure of their credentials. A claims adjuster, or an organization like a chamber of commerce or the Better Business Bureau can be a great help.
